ICE Transfer Versus Release
ICE’s Online Detainee Locator System searches current civil immigration detention. It does not document every historical Stafford County jail release. If a Sheriff record says “ICE hold” or “released to ICE,” preserve the distinction: county custody ended, but another authority may have taken custody immediately.
No official source reviewed identified an ICE facility or county ICE detention contract in Stafford County. That narrow finding does not prove ICE never lodges a detainer or takes custody in a specific case. The named-person county record and ICE search are the appropriate checks.
Final confirmation: obtain the Stafford booking/release sheet for the county event and verify current ICE custody through ODLS or ICE’s detention information channel. Do not infer community release from either system’s silence.
Search ICE Detainee Records
ODLS offers two basic search routes. The most precise uses the person’s A-number, which is the immigration file number, together with country of birth. The biographical route uses exact name information, country of birth, and other fields offered by the interface. Enter names carefully because spacing, order, and spelling can affect a match.

- Use the A-number and country-of-birth route when the number is known.
- Otherwise enter the exact biographical data and try supported name variants.
- Read the displayed custody or location directions without assuming they describe the earlier Stafford event.
- If no result appears after careful checks, use ICE’s Detention Reporting and Information Line or counsel.
The locator is designed around current location and has privacy and coverage limits. Some people do not appear publicly. Transfers and data timing can also affect results. A no-result is not affirmative evidence of release.
Stafford County Handoff Record
The Stafford County Sheriff’s event record is the best bridge from local custody. Ask for the release date and time, disposition, hold notation, and transfer destination tied to the named admission. “Not currently held” is incomplete. The disposition must show whether the person left on bond, completed a local term, moved to another jail, or entered federal or ICE custody.

If the county record identifies ICE but ODLS has no result, do not rewrite the county event as a community release. The person may be in transit, outside public coverage, listed under different data, or no longer in ICE custody for another reason. Follow the official ICE information route.
ICE Locator Data Limits
ODLS is not a complete immigration case history. It does not establish when Stafford County custody ended, the basis for the immigration matter, or the final outcome. It may direct a user to a detention facility or provide next steps, but the immigration court and ICE records answer different questions.
Biographical matching deserves care. Similar names can identify different people, while spelling differences can hide a match. Use the A-number when lawfully available because it narrows the search. Do not publish sensitive identifiers or expose another person’s private information while seeking confirmation.
A transfer can occur faster than a public locator update. The source hierarchy is therefore event-specific: Stafford County for the county exit, ICE for present immigration detention, and the immigration case process for legal proceedings.
Federal Custody Is Not BOP
ICE civil detention and BOP criminal imprisonment are separate systems. A person in ICE custody should not be searched only through the BOP Inmate Locator. Likewise, a former federal prisoner shown as released by BOP may later enter ICE custody, and the BOP result cannot rule that out.
The U.S. Marshals Service is another distinct federal channel for pretrial prisoners and transfers. A Stafford County record may name a federal destination without specifying the final facility. Read the exact agency and follow that route instead of treating “federal” as one database.
Request ICE Release Evidence
For proof of the Stafford handoff, request the Sheriff’s existing release record. For ICE custody or release documents, follow ICE’s records process and identify the person using the fields the agency requests. Immigration records may have privacy restrictions, so public locator information and an authorized records request are not interchangeable.
A court docket may help when the transfer arose alongside a criminal matter, but it does not replace the physical-custody records. Keep the chronology clear: local admission, county exit, federal receipt if confirmed, later ICE transfer or release, and any separate supervision.
Confirm Community Return
Community return requires more than disappearance from a county or ICE screen. Read the Stafford disposition and determine whether it names a custodial recipient. Check ODLS using both valid search routes. If the person was found and later disappears, seek an ICE record or authorized confirmation rather than guessing why.
The safest statement is limited to the source: Stafford County recorded a transfer, ICE currently locates the person, or ICE no longer returns a public result. Only an official release document or authorized confirmation settles the specific ICE release event.
